Senior Data Engineer / DBA

Job Description

We are seeking a full-time, remote Senior Data Engineer / DBA to manage and optimize our client’s data systems, including SQL Server, MongoDB, and TimescaleDB. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in fine tuning and optimizing various databases as well as creating and maintaining cloud architecture, data management, with a specific focus on both AWS and Azure services. 

You will collaborate closely with the software engineering teams to design data models and structures that support the client’s business requirements, ensuring high availability, disaster recovery, performance, and security across all environments. This position also requires hands-on expertise in developing data pipelines and ETL processes as well as leveraging scripting languages to automate key data processes.

Our client is a leading provider of commercial refrigeration solutions including innovative software that includes its flagship AI software product that monitors deployed systems, detects issues early, and avoids costly unexpected repairs. The company innovates in their industry with other critical software including field management, customer relationship management, accounting, and additional operational systems.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, fine-tune and optimize instances of MS SQL Server, MongoDb Atlas, and TimeScaleDB databases to ensure high availability and performance
  • Develop and manage database systems, including installation, configuration, and upgrades
  • Architect solutions in AWS and Azure cloud environments, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and cost-efficiency of data services and infrastructure
  • Collaborate with software engineering teams to design data models and structures that support business requirements
  • Provide hands-on coding expertise and technical leadership in the development of data pipelines and ETL processes for migrating data
  • Leverage scripting languages to automate key processes governing data movement, cleansing, and processing activities
  • Monitor and troubleshoot database and query performance issues as well as ensure data integrity and implement solutions to improve efficiency
  • Perform code reviews on SQL procedures, Mongo aggregations, and data-related software queries
  • Conduct technical evaluations of existing systems, identify areas for improvement, and propose effective solutions
  • Develop and implement data governance and security policies to ensure data integrity and compliance with regulations, such as SOC2
  • Lead the design and implementation of scalable, secure, and robust data architectures that support both operational and analytical workloads, ensuring compliance with SOC2 and other relevant regulations
  • Develop and optimize high-performance SQL and NoSQL databases, applying best practices in database design and management, including indexing, query optimization, and performance tuning

Experience

Required

  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, or a related field
  • 7+ years of data modeling experience (i.e., Relational, Dimensional, Columnar, Big Data)
  • 7+ years of experience with complex SQL or NoSQL
  • Proven expertise in AWS and Azure cloud services and tools, particularly those related to data storage, processing, and analytics
  • Extensive experience with data transformation and a deep understanding of data modeling, data warehousing, and ETL processes, with experience in designing solutions that support both real-time and batch data processing
  • Strong foundation in SQL and NoSQL database development, performance tuning, and optimization
  • Demonstrable hands-on coding skills in languages such as SQL, Python, .NET, or similar, with the ability to prototype solutions and lead by example
  • Knowledge of data governance, data quality management, and data security practices, especially SOC2
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities, with a strategic mindset and the capability to drive architectural decisions
  • Experience with DevOps and CI/CD technologies
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to work with both business and technical users to define and gather reporting and analytics requirements as well as translate them into comprehensive data reporting strategies and analytic solutions
  • Experience with business requirements definition and management, structured analysis, process design, and use case documentation
  • Significant experience working in an Agile environment with hands-on experience with Agile tools, such as Jira
  • Self-managed, proactive, and team focused

Desired

  • Knowledge of advanced analytics, machine learning, and AI tools and frameworks
  • Experience configuring and working with analytical Databases, such as Databricks, to support advanced analytics, reporting, and data processing
  • Develop and draft detailed reports for business users using Databricks
  • Certification in Microsoft Azure or AWS
