Senior Back-End Engineer
(Python)

Job Description

We are seeking a full-time, remote Senior Back-End Engineer with 5+ years of back-end experience including 3+ years of Python. You will play a critical role in designing, building, and optimizing the application and data architecture that powers our client’s heathtech software. Working with the client team, you will develop systems and processes that unify and process complex datasets, such as clinical trial data, genomics, imaging, and wearable sensors, into a central data model. Your work will have a direct and immediate impact on active clinical research, enabling biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies to accelerate decision-making, improve clinical workflows, and advance life sciences innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and ship new products and features
  • Advance product functionality, performance, and scalability using Python
  • Create, publish, and consume data utilizing API endpoints
  • Lead back-end architectural decisions, always advocating for best practices
  • Work closely with the front-end team to bring creative solutions to life, ensuring delivery of unparalleled user experiences
  • Write unit and feature tests
  • Estimate delivery timelines for features, bug fixes, and enhancements
  • Participate in code reviews and support teammates with constructive feedback
  • Maximize development efficiency by continuously discovering, evaluating, and implementing new technologies
  • Provide mentorship to junior developers as well as foster a learning and growth environment
  • Engage in critical feedback processes to refine concepts and ensure solutions surpass customer expectations
  • See the big picture and support the client's mission

Experience

Required

  • Excellent English communication skills
  • 5+ years of back-end software engineering experience
  • 3+ years of experience using Python to build and optimize back-end systems
  • Cloud engineering experience in platforms such as GCP
  • Experience developing, testing, and deploying production-grade back-end services
  • Skilled in building robust, scalable systems and APIs
  • Experience designing and implementing data pipelines including proficiency with ETL processes, data ingestion, and transformation workflows
  • Strong application-focused understanding of data performance with an ability to optimize data queries, troubleshoot bottlenecks, and ensure efficient data handling
  • Team player with excellent communication skills, capable of working collaboratively within an Agile framework and with cross-disciplinary teams, such as engineers, designers, and product managers
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity with an ability to assess evolving requirements and weigh trade-offs to balance code robustness versus quick iteration
  • Strong foundation in software engineering practices, including version control with Git, testing methodologies, and CI/CD
  • A commitment to continuous learning and staying abreast of the latest back-end technologies and practices
  • Proven experience in a vibrant, dynamic startup environment
  • Trustworthy, team-oriented, transparent, and fun

Desired

  • University degree in computer science, related field of study, or equivalent experience
  • Experience in web frameworks like Django
  • Experience with frameworks like Kedro / Argo
  • Experience in scientific or biomedical domains including familiarity with handling datasets from clinical trials, genomics, imaging, or other healthcare-related sources
  • Familiarity with audit trails and logs Knowledge of clinical data standards (e.g., HL7-FHIR, CDISC, OMOP)
  • Full stack development experience. While this is primarily a back-end position, knowledge or experience with other aspects of the tech stack (i.e., React.js, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, D3) is helpful.
